Higher insurance premiums for traffic violators

The Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed that traffic violators be made to pay an increased insurance premium. The Corporation plans to share violation data gathered from the Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) with insurance companies. The ITS is expected to be operational in four months, after it receives approval by the civic body. A network of fibre optic cables for the system will be set up by the Corporation in the city for the system. While the system can help police to enforce traffic rules better by detecting traffic signal and speed limit violations, it will also do other tasks ? area traffic control, traffic management, management of garbage vehicles, surveillance of critical places, vehicle tracking, fleet management and disseminating information about the city buses to commuters. Over 120 cameras have been installed at important junctions and surveillance points in the city with a central control and monitoring station at Swargate.
