Double-decker Bangalore-Chennai train

The Railways will shortly introduce a new double-decker train service between Bangalore and Chennai. A trial run of the train was conducted recently and services are expected to begin in March. The train has a maximum speed of 160kmph with a section speed of 105-110kmph. It is fitted with a chassis provided by the German firm Lukwe Holfmann Busch (LHB). The chassis ensures that coaches do not pile up in case of mishaps. There are 11 air-conditioned coaches in the train, each with a capacity to seat 120 passengers. Every row will be provided with bottle holders, push back seats, windscreens and charging socket, and food trays at the back of each seat. To accommodate the stairs between the two decks, the length of the coaches has been increased by reducing the vestibular gap between the coaches. A second trial will be conducted on the train before giving it the clearance certificate.
