Bangalore East-West Metro

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has appointed Mott MacDonald as technical consultant for the first phase of the new East-West Underground Metro in Bangalore. The 4.5km long East-West Metro covers four stations.

The first phase, to be completed by 2013, is being developed as a complementary mode of transport. 3.3km of the Metro will be twin-bored with cut-and-cover tunnels and 470m will have cut-and-cover ramps. Mott MacDonald will provide detailed design services for the project which poses significant challenges like the stations and tunnels which have to be excavated over regions with wide sub-soil variation. The existing buildings along the route may be affected by the construction of the metro and traffic decking over deep excavations.

Mott MacDonald has also been appointed as design consultant for the Majestic interchange station, which is at present a major bus station. The new plans for the interchange station include proposals to develop two levels of interconnected platforms, a main concourse area and a dedicated underground subway.
