The Maharashtra Transport Department has issued 12.3 lakh e-challans in six months using the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on Atal Setu and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The AI-powered system actively monitors traffic violations, primarily focusing on speeding, lane cutting, and illegal parking. With 70% of cases related to speeding, ITMS has significantly improved traffic monitoring and road safety, ensuring stricter enforcement of traffic rules through automated surveillance and instant e-challan issuance.
Equipped with AI-enabled cameras, ITMS enables real-time traffic analysis and automatic number plate recognition, streamlining the enforcement of road safety regulations. On the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, where daily traffic reaches up to 60,000 vehicles on weekends, ITMS monitors 17 different violations. The system’s effectiveness has led to increased compliance, with motorists adhering to speed limits and lane discipline, reducing instances of reckless driving.
Looking ahead, Maharashtra Transport authorities plan to expand ITMS to key highways, including Samruddhi Mahamarg, to enhance traffic management and road safety technology across the state. The system also facilitates quick identification of disabled vehicles, minimizing congestion and improving response times. With its successful implementation, ITMS is transforming the way traffic violations are detected and managed, reinforcing responsible driving habits.
