Supreme Court sets up panel on road safety

The Supreme Court has set up a 3-member panel to monitor road safety measures implementation across the country. The panel will be headed by Justice KS Radhakrishnan and will have former secretary, Ministry of Surface Transport, S Sundar and former Head of Department of Traffic Engineering and Safety Nishi Mittal as members.

All state governments and the central ministries involved in road safety issues have to submit an initial report within three months detailing the status of implementation of laws relating to licencing, certification of vehicle fitness, vehicles’ passenger/weight carrying capacities, adherence to road user norms and deployment of adequate police personnel for enforcement. The committee will also do a detailed scrutiny of the reports received from states and the Centre and point out deficiencies on the part of various stakeholders.
