Trains in India are all set to get airplane style vacuum toilets. These toilets are the second phase of improving cleanliness on trains after the introduction of bio ? toilets earlier this year. The Railways have identified 55 cities where toilet systems in trains are in particularly bad condition and where the introduction of vacuum toilets will be carried out on a priority basis. A global bid for tenders for the supply of 80 vacuum toilet systems for 40 coach sets has been floated by the Railway Board. After the toilets are supplied, they will be fitted inside the coach by the Rail Coach factory (RCF) at Kapurthala. The RCF has already produced about 12oo bio-toilets this year. IIT Kanpur along with the Research Development and Standards Organisation (RDSO), a ISO 9001 research and development organisation under the Ministry of Railways, is also in the process of developing a zero discharge toilet system (ZDTS).
