The idea of this product came from a beta customer for a previous product I was working on in the hospitality space. My startup had already won a startup contest in the UK for that previous product but when I started learning more about the vehicle parking problem, the possibilities of using technology to solve
it so excited me that I decided to pivot away from the previous product. The parking problem is a last mile problem that I have personally experienced for
over 15 years as a vehicle owner. It is a huge growing need all over the world, but especially in developing countries like India.

GetParking was launched in early 2015. Before that, I had worked on three other products but decided not to launch them. Developing and launching a Playstation 2 game in 10 months flat with an inexperienced team and migrating a complex server platform that supports nearly 30 million MAU to cloud, have been some of the difficult things that are a part of my career. However, none of these compare to the difficulty of launching a startup and this is undeniably the hardest and one of the most satisfying things I have done in my life.

GetParking provides an end-to-end smart parking solution to parking space managers, operators and owners. This helps them digitise their parking operations improving parking utilisation, efficiency, revenues, security and the overall parking experience. In our system, a parking warden presses one or two buttons to perform any parking operation using a phone and the system can automatically open boom barriers, display information on LED panels, print receipts or tickets, etc. All of this data is updated and synchronised on the cloud. This allows their managers and owners to see what is going on in that parking lot.

One of the biggest problems with current systems is that they are dependent on the parking warden/ operator to input the information but in GetParking (our solution), we provide our own cameras and IoT sensors which can automate this completely or partially, prevent negligence or eliminate fraud by the operators.

The key highlight of Get Parking is that we have built all the aspects of the solution (Internet of Things, Machine learning, Computer vision) ourselves. This gives us tremendous functional and economic advantage over our competitors who have to import this technology into India. Moreover, we can customise our solution for Indian working conditions. For example, an imported on-street parking sensor may not work in the Mumbai monsoon. Similarly, the ANPR/ LPR cameras are either not very accurate at detecting Indian number plates or they tend to be very expensive. In comparison, our solutions are more cost effective, customised and comprehensive, yet simple.

Finally, with our ‘GetParking’ vehicle owner App, we help vehicle owners find parking easily or decide whether they should drive to their destination based on the expected parking availability.

GetParking is the end-to-end vehicle parking solution designed and developed for emerging markets like India. An end-to-end ‘Make In India’ technology movement in the vehicle parking space is being pioneered by us.

We have built the IoT platform, the cloud backend, the wireless communication stack, the mobile Apps, the smart cameras and all the software to handle any kind of parking flow from valet to paid parking, off-street to on-street, surface to multilevel car parking. All of this is integrated with a wide range of parking infrastructure and devices such as vehicle detection sensors, boom barriers, LED displays, printers, ticketing terminals, payment terminals, etc. Our system is modular and supports a lot of existing infrastructure that many parking lots already own. For end users, we provide functionality like way-finding and parking guidance. All of this is integrated into a super simple user experience that typically costs 1/3rd of imported technology and offers much, much more.

Our startup now has a strong three member founding team. All of us have studied in IIMs, IITs and worked at companies like EA, Microsoft, Yahoo, KPMG and Infosys in key roles spanning product development, technology, product management, business unit management, marketing, sales, finance and investment banking. We want to grow to cover all of India and go beyond India to the key emerging markets in APAC, MENA, LATAM and others.

Our customers are private businesses like malls, pay and parks, hospitals, airports, railway stations as well as Government departments and Smart Cities.
