Volvo-Eicher Commercial Vehicles Ltd (VECV) conducted a comprehensive Road Safety Training Programme for drivers throughout the country on the occasion of Road Safety Week 2012, and trained about 3500 drivers. The programme was inaugurated on January 2nd by Prabhat Parashar, Commissioner Indore, and Anuradha Shankar, IGP Indore. A programme “The Safe Drivers Mela” was held at in which regional driver trainers from the company conducted road safety training programmes for drivers of all vehicles – two wheelers, three wheelers, LMV, MMV, HMV, passenger vehicles, school buses and hazardous goods transport drivers. These programmes took place at Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Cuttack, Mysore and Chennai. They were implemented with the help of local traffic police, local administration, transport commissioners of various states, district collectors and SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers). There was special emphasis on drivers’ education and health. Drivers were trained in safe driving, fuel conservation and proper operation and maintenance of vehicles. Free medical examination camps, including eye testing and screening for HIV-AIDS were conducted. Educating school children in road safety was also one of the focus areas of these programmes. The children were shown an Eicher Road Safety film “Pehla Kadam, Safe Roads, Safe Kids”. Educational road shows, spreading the message of road safety for the general public, were also organised at various locations at Indore during the Road Safety Week.
