New Zealand to test NFC mobile ticketing service

A consortium consisting of Auckland Transport, Telecom New Zealand, financial services provider Westpac, ticketing specialist Thales and Paymark, NZ’s ATM and debit card services provider, are set to test a NFC (near field communication) mobile ticketing service in Auckland. The NFC service will allow users with NFC-enabled mobile phones to pay for tickets on the city’s buses, trains and ferries, and for purchases at select retail outlets. Payments are made for public transport through a NZ Telecom prepaid account which can be topped up from a Westpac credit card using Paymark’s infrastructure. This eliminates the need for the user to go online or to a store to recharge the account. The new service is based at Auckland Transport’s new smart card ticketing system HOP.
