Integrated Intelligent Transport System at Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumabi Municipal Corporation recently introduced real-time data-driven Integrated Intelligent Transport System (IITS).  As part of IITS project, Automatic Vehicle Location System/ GPS was also installed on 448 buses that make 4,000 daily trips. The system helps track the vehicles’ routes and check if they have sped away without stopping at any of the designated bus stops. Some of the other key modules include an Automatic Vehicle Location System, Passenger Information System, a mobile application for citizens, a Command and Control Centre, an incident management system, an Automatic Fare Collection System, Planning and Scheduling Management and Business Intelligence systems, among others. The control room is located at CBD Belapur.

Along with ITMS project, NMMC had also came up with an app which can inform every passenger about when a bus is arriving, if it is on time or if there has there been a breakdown,” informed Municipal Commissioner, Annasaheb Misal. They also launched a Navi Smart Card that can be used for ticketing and shopping too.

NMMC also has plans to introduce environment-friendly transportation in the city and help the people health-wise. The main aim of this initiative is to reduce pollution caused by the growing number of vehicles on the road. The civic body has partnered with a bicycle rental startup called Yulu. These cycles are fitted with a GPS tracking system and sensors so that the contractor can keep a tab on the cycles.

Speaking to TrafficInfraTech on the citizen initiative, Misal highlighted about ‘family traffic cop’ programme by Navi Mumbai traffic police. The programme ropes in schoolchildren to help reduce traffic violations. The young ‘cops’ will be demoted if their family vehicles are found to be involved in offences.

The ‘cops’ will then give details of the vehicles in their family. The children will get the letter every time the vehicles flout a rule. If there are three violations in a family, the family traffic ‘cop’ will lose the cap. If there is no violation for a year, then they will be rewarded with promotions. Starting with a red badge, they can be promoted to an amber badge and then green badge designed after the traffic signal lights.
