Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the mandatory installation of driver fatigue and sleep detection devices in trucks to improve road safety in India. He highlighted that many truck drivers in the country operate for up to 15 to 18 hours at a stretch, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Sixty six percent of road accident fatalities in India involve individuals aged 18 to 45 years and about 10,000 children have lost their lives due to unsafe exit and entry points at schools, 55,000 deaths occurred due to riders not wearing helmets, and 30,000 deaths were linked to the absence of seatbelt usage in rear seats, according to estimates.
