Afcons infra bags Chennai Metro projects

A consortium of Afcons and the Russian infrastructure major, Transtonnelstroy Limited has bagged two projects – UAA01 and UAA05 for the construction of Chennai Metro Rail. Chennai Metro Rail, which has been designed to be a rapid transit rail system, will be executed in two phases. The first phase comprises two corridors – Corridor 1 from Meddavaram to St. Thomas Mount and Corridor 2 from Madhavaram to Lighthouse via Radhakrishnan Salai. About 55% of corridors would be underground and the rest would be elevated.

The projects involve the design and construction of nine underground stations and tunnels associated with the stations, covering a distance of 8.6km. The work on them began in February 2011, and is scheduled to be completed by April 2015. UAA01 falls under corridor 1 of the project and covers a distance of 5.5km spanning Washermenpet to Egmore stations, with five stations in between. UAA01 falls under corridor 2 of the project and covers a distance of 3.1km comprising four stations from Shenoy Nagar to Thirumangalam. Afcons Infrastructure Ltd has participated in the Delhi and Kolkata Metro projects, and is currently executing the first underwater metro tunnel below Hooghly river in Kolkata. It has also executed infrastructure projects in the Middle East.
