Tamil Nadu launches 5-year road maintenance contracts

The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a new performance-based maintenance contract system for the state roads. The system is expected to improve the quality of roads and ease traffic congestion by providing better roads. The system will cover both ? laying of new roads and highways as well as maintenance of existing ones. The scheme will be launched on a trial basis on a 191km stretch of the state highways and on 185.98km of main roads in the district of Coimbatore in the state. The highways component is expected to cost around ?1.2 billion while the main roads around ?1.1 billion. The state government has also allocated another ?2.4 billion towards various new road projects and renovation of highways and roads across the state.
