SkyToll, a global leader in GNSS-based toll systems, has successfully completed a pilot project on the Rohtak-Hisar section of National Highway 10. This milestone has positioned the company as a potential key player in revolutionizing India’s toll collection systems using advanced satellite technology. Dushyant Deshpande, Director of SkyToll Pvt Ltd, speaks about the uniqe project and the company’s future plans in India.
We see a lot of potential in the Indian market, because India is heavily investing in its road infrastructure – and we are able to support this growth with great signalling products and systems
– Dushyant Deshpande
What has been the focus of this pilot project?
Our goal was to validate the feasibility of toll collection using GNSS technology and demonstrate how it can ensure the smooth flow of traffic without disrupting the existing road infrastructure. The project involved a Multi-Lane Free Flow detection system that enabled us to classify vehicles and monitor traffic without the need for traditional toll plazas.
An essential part of the pilot was the integration of our GNSS technology with the existing FASTag payment ecosystem. We showcased a variety of payment methods, including UPI, credit cards, and bank cards, as alternatives for toll payments. This aspect of the project was successfully completed according to the specifications set by Indian Highways Management Company Limited, proving the interoperability and versatility of our solution.
What kind of collaboration with partners in India did this project involve?
Collaboration was critical to the success of this project. We worked closely with local partners, such as Tecsidel India for toll charging, Kotak Mahindra Bank as the acquirer and issuer bank, and the NPCI team for payment processing and settlement. The on-board units required for the test were provided by Arya OMNITALK & Wheels Eye. We are grateful for the support and expertise of all these partners.
Did you have to solve any unexpected issues?
There are always some challenges in such projects. The biggest one in this project was coordinating efforts across multiple stakeholders while ensuring compliance with local regulations and adapting to the unique characteristics of Indian roadways. I believe that it was our international experience in similar projects that allowed us to mitigate these challenges effectively.
SkyToll now has an office in India. What is your perspective on the market potential and possible challenges of implementing international technology solutions in India?
India is a rapidly growing market with immense potential for advanced transportation infrastructure. There is a pressing need for innovative solutions that can optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety. However, implementing international technology in India requires deep understanding of local conditions, regulatory requirements, and user behavior.
Our aim is to collaborate closely with local partners and authorities to ensure that the solutions we offer are adapted to Indian conditions. Only a few companies globally have the requisite experience and proven expertise to meet these stringent demands, and SkyToll is proud to be one of them.
