The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed a new street improvement project “Pune Streets Programme” to build well planned streets in the city. About 1800km of streets in the city would be improved in a phased manner under the project. The Pune Streets Programme is a part of the PMC’s programme to create a road network friendly for pedestrians and bicyclists and involves consistent edge-to-edge street designs and best practices in the field.
The project will be based on a comprehensive street design manual which will be prepared after extensive consultations with a wide range of the public including bus commuters, pedestrians, bicycle users, hawkers, vendors, auto rickshaw unions, waster pickers’ unions, schools, colleges and NGOs working on issues related to traffic and transport. Detailed landscaping plans, land use surveys, traffic counts and other surveys related to on-street parking facilities and street activity will be used to prepare the street design manual. A working group consisting of technical officers will coordinate and supervise the project.
