In a measure that will save 5,71,261 units of electricity every year, the Chennai Municipal Corporation will replace 2,796 street lights with solar powered LED lamps in the slum areas of nine of its zones. Estimated to cost र6.63 crore, the new 70-watt sodium vapour lamps will cut down the corporation’s annual energy bill by र30 lakh. The project is being carried out under the BSUP (Basic Services to Urban Poor) II scheme.
