Road Safety Week

India has reported the highest number of road accident fatalists in the world. As per the directive from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, National Road Safety Week was observed all over India from January 11-17. The 25th Road safety week saw States/UTS/NGOs and other stakeholders/agencies involved in road safety undertake various activities aimed at promoting road safety. The theme of the safety week this year was ?When on the Road, always say Pehele Aap?. The 25th National Road Safety Week was well supported by stakeholders from across India including SIAM, IRF, AAUI, AIM, NHAI, HPCL, IOC, BPCL, Mother Dairy, Police & Sate Transport Departments, Ashok Leyland, Agarwal Packers and Movers besides others .

Road Safety Awareness Walk was the highlight of Safety Week. In the walkathon organized by MoRTH on January 12 at India Gate, Delhi, over 1000 school and college students, professionals, NCC cadets, enthusiasts from Brahma Kumari ashram, doctors, lawyers and road safety organizations participated. The walk was led by Vijay Chibber, Secretary, MoRTH and included active participations by Ministry officials.

The nationwide activities included:

? Display of road safety messages at traffic intersections and highways in Maharashtra and Delhi

? Road safety Nukkad natak by school students

? Painting and quiz competition

? Make a Pledge

? Training Programs for 3-wheeler drivers

? Road safety Refresher workshops for commercial vehicle drivers including topics like safe driving techniques, road signs, prevention and maintenance of trucks etc for heavy vehicle drivers

? Road safety two wheeler rider training

? Road safety awareness drive for drivers at Haridwar, Chandigarh, Pathankot, Gurgaon, Bhiwandi, Vasi, Jalgaon, Chattisgarh, Shimla and Karnataka,

? Health check camps at Haridwar, Pathankot, Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Bhiwandi, Vasi, and Jalgaon in Maharashtra and Chattisgarh

? Refresher workshop of road safety for drivers in Shimla, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Cuttack, Paradeep and Balasore in Orissa

? Display of Road Safety Week banners outside the Ministry

? Display of Road Safety Posters at 1100 Mother Dairy and Safal Outlets, and Pehle Aap Banners at 750 HPCL, IOC Petrol Pumps, Gas Agencies.

? Display of Banners at Toll Plaza?s by NHAI across all states and UT?s

? Road Safety Awareness advertisement through Dual Display Infotainment Systems (DDIS) and through OOH media at Railways reservation counters at stations across six states

? Newspaper Ads, TV commercials, Radio jingles etc during the Week

? Distribution of awareness material within the organizations and related organizations like awareness booklets on road safety ?think before you drive?, safe school bus cd?s, posters, leaflets, T-shirts, caps etc

? Free Eye Check up Camp (including free specs distribution)

? Pollution Under Control (PUC) checking camps.

? HMV Refresher course for Truck Drivers.

? Tyre Pressure gauge for motorists.

? Display of hoardings with road safety messages

? Road Safety Seminars and interaction

? Distribution of awareness material through Toll Plazas

? Highlighting Black Spots through hoardings and signage

? Blood Donation Camps for road accident victims
