Gujarat ranks eighth in the country when it comes to people dying in road accidents as per the latest National Crime Records Bureau report. The figures are staggering.
The State government is coming up with a state road safety policy which will ensure a “zero black spot policy”. This means that a design audit of all rural and urban roads will be conducted to make them safer. Safety feature checks in vehicles will be made mandatory at regular intervals. Installation of safety features in all vehicles will be made compulsory. Designs and engineering of highways and internal roads will be improved and standardized. On the enforcement front, police will be equipped with better speed guns, high-definition CCTV cameras, which will be part of the e-challan system. Medical assistance in emergencies will be made more effective. The new policy will cover all aspects from road construction to enforcement by police and RTO for effective traffic management.
