Mumbai may get street parking for cars

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the use of street space for parking cars in a bid to ease the chronic parking space shortage in the city. The city traffic police is preparing a list of roads where vehicles could be accommodated on one side. The spaces would be exclusively for residents of buildings who don?t have parking space in their premises. If approved, the proposal will lead to certain stretches of roads in the city being reserved for parked vehicles. Apartment owners will have to pay for reserving space outside their buildings. One family will be allowed to book space for only one car. The parking charges are still being finalised by the BMC. Residents will be issued on-street parking permits which may have barcodes. The barcodes will enable the police to identify cases of illegal parking. The on-street parking will be also integrated with a web-based system to enable the tracking of suspicious vehicles. With the web-based system, residents can book parking spaces and permits online and data can be transferred to a central server immediately.
