LS approves bill for traffic reforms in India

India’s transport sector is set to witness many radical reforms, if the recent approval of a bill by the Lok Sabha is anything to go by. Compensation of Rs 5 lakhs for grave injuries in accidents, checking of bogus licenses and vehicle theft, and multifold hike in fine for traffic violations are some of the reforms mentioned in the bill.

The bill, that will amend the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, will also cap the maximum liability for third party insurance in case of a death in motor accident to Rs 10 lakh. It will be operated on the basis of 100 percent e-governance. MoRTH Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that once e-governance begins, bogus driving licences and theft of vehicles will be a thing of past. The bill has provision for payment of the entire compensation by the insurance companies. A death in hit-and-run cases will attract an eight-fold increase in compensation amounting to Rs 2 lakh. The family of an accident victim will be entitled to a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs that will have to be settled within four months of the accident. National database of vehicles and driving licences is another positive aspect of the bill.
