Jammu and Kashmir observes Road Safety 2012

Jammu and Kashmir observed Road Safety Week 2012 from January 1-7. The one-week campaign began with a rally from Maulana Azad Stadium by school students carrying placards such as ‘Wear Helmet’ ‘Be Aware on Road’. The Jammu and Kashmir Scouts and Guides also participated actively in the Road Safety campaign. At a function on January 1 to mark the campaign the State Minister for Transport and CA&PD Qamar Ali Akhoon reportedly said that the state government has planned to set up to two institutions which would impart training in the latest and state-of-the-art traffic management systems. The Srinagar Traffic Police organised a cycle race on January 2nd from Ram Munshi Bagh to Nishat garden to increase awareness of road safety among the general public. The race was flagged off by Vijay Kumar, DIG (Traffic) Vijay Kumar. At the concluding function on January 7th the state agriculture minister Ghulam Hassan Mir reportedly said that both motorists and pedestrians should follow traffic rules to avoid accidents, and loss of human life. He emphasised the need for creating awareness among people about traffic rules and regulations by organising regular programmes at the district and tehsil level programmes.
