Electronic toll collection system by 2012

An electronic toll collection (ETC) system, to be introduced by the government in 2010, will not only help save fuel but also reduce commuting time. The equipment to be used for the system is based on Radio Frequency Identification technology. It will transmit the identity of an object or a person by wireless, using radio waves, to the data centre. Rechargable syicker yags with unique IDs fixed on the windshield wil be detected when a vehicle passes a toll plaza. The system, presently being used in Georgia and Puerto Rico, will allow people to travel all over the country without having to stop at toll booths.
