In a bid to minimise emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken a policy decision to make all its upcoming station buildings green.
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) will issue guidelines for designing the station structures. As per the specifications of the IGBC, all upcoming metro station buildings will have their roofs made with reflective materials, landscapes with vegetation to increase energy efficiency, less water consuming plant species for landscaping, insulated building envelopes for improved energy efficiency, adequate ventilation facilities for fresh air, health-friendly paints & adhesives and low water consuming fixtures. These green metro stations will also have specific provisions for the conservation of energy as well as better CO2 saving, water saving and waste management arrangements.
Apart from the Metro stations, 12 receiving sub-stations as well as the upcoming residential quarters of the DMRC will be designed in similar way. This green building practice will be followed by all other upcoming metro rail projects in Jaipur, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Pune in the near future.
