Building the Trichy- Karur Stretch of NH-67

Design Innovation and Sustainable Construction

  • Optimistic alignment was made for minimizing acquisition of built-up area and avoiding conflict with railway boundary.
  • 75% of highway alignment was shifted effectively for avoiding additional cost and time for shifting of Canal Bund.
  • Strategical alignment improvements within the physical and financial constraints resulted in strengthening and utilizing existing major bridge.

During the project phase, much attention was paid to minimize the resettlement problems, cutting of trees and shifting of cultural properties. In design phase emphasis has been made to all the junctions and crossings which have substantially improved the environment and traffic safety.

Reliance Infrastructure was committed towards sustainable construction all through the project:

  • Rain Water Harvesting: Right from the project design phase, the possibility and feasibility of preserving and conserving Rainwater – generated within the project stretch – had been taken care.
  • For efficient roadside drainage and surface run-off, provision of earthen toe drain has been made throughout the entire stretch except built up area where covered lined drain has been provided. In villages trapezoidal line drain has been provided. The entire drainage network is well integrated with the nearby cross drainage structures, streams, nallahs, etc.
  • For effective drainage of storm water in curves and super-elevated portions, median drains have been constructed, which is collecting the rainwater from upper side and disposing them off into the lower side of longitudinal drains.
  • Environment Management & Pollution Control: Minimal tree cutting has been an important considération since the start of the project. Various varieties of trees such as mango, tamarind, neem, pugai etc with girth size varying from 0.30m to 2.50m which were present on both sides of the road have been retained thus helping maintain the existing ecology and thereby reducing the impact on environment during construction. Further to attenuate the environment impacts due to cutting of trees, re-plantation of tress has been carried out along the highway.
  • Landscaping: Proper landscaping has been done for the highway alignment. Toll Plaza and junctions have been designed to fit in with surroundings using very aesthetic & green design elements. Planting of shrubs, anti-glare hedges and trees on medians and sides of highways for reducing headlight glare effect, visual instruction, noise pollution and air pollution..
  • Landscaping includes stabilization of embankment by pitching and plantation. The treatment of embankment slopes along the highway.
  • Turfing Geomesh on slopes of high embankment for controlling erosion due to rains and wind to provide stability of the slopes.
  • Water Sprinkler has been used to control fugitive dust emission in the construction area during the construction phase.
  • Waste Management: Construction waste has been disposed off in proper way, in order to ensure that water bodies are not contaminated.
  • Mobile environmental cell (mobile Van) implemented at site for the monitoring the environmental parameters.
