ATCS for effective signaling cycle

So to say, the more info sources you want to use for making traffic decision, the more likely that you will face the problem of not being able to integrate the data because of the above mentioned economic mechanism. Going by the tenders we read, we see that a growing number of city authorities are aware of this and do counteracting by requesting open interfaces. It is good to see happy how fast things are happening in the Indian market.

It is most important to see the big picture and to share this knowledge with all traffic related stakeholders. At the end of the day, only an informed driver has the chance to become a smart driver.

The current traffic control system (TCS) in India cities are inefficient due to randomness in the traffic density pattern throughout the day. The traffic signal timers have a fixed time period to switch traffic between different directions. Whereas in metro cities like Mumbai and Delhi, the traffic condition has improved in certain locations with the help of adaptive traffic control system. As the number of vehicles are rising rapidly and infrastructure has limited area to grow, India has to think very broadly in this field.

The current number plate recognition system has very limited accuracy due to nonstandardization of the number plates and non-visibility during night time. We need to adopt the RFID tag technology which can give proper information in real time. In any situation, RFID tag gives better result than NPR.

The existing adaptive parking control system installed in India mainly relies on video graphics, which works on the Stopped Vehicle Detection (SVD). SVD has capability of covering only limited stretch and is able to provide minimal percentage of the desired result due to indiscipline driving pattern & illegal parking on the road.

To get better results from ATCS, we must address issues like improvement in driving pattern and strict law enforcement for violations.
