BIS certification mandatory for two-wheeler helmet

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to revise the maximum weight of two-wheeler helmet from January15, 2019. Currently, the maximum allowed weight is 1.5kg, which is now being changed to 1.2kg. The road transport ministry has also started the process to bring manufacturing of all motorcycle helmets under the mandatory regime to get BIS certification. This will mean sale of non-standard helmets will become an offence.

The new norms of lighter helmets and mandatory provision for ventilation holes in the headgear have been made considering the reasons why bike riders do not prefer wearing them. The new norms will protect the skull & head and required strength of the helmet where the impact is more in case of an accident. All manufacturers have got six months to comply with the new norm.
