Under the banner of Smart Mobility this time, the three-day long TrafficInfraTech Expo and Parking InfraTech Expo got off to a strong start on the September 1, with Sanjay Mitra, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) inaugurating it. Stepping in for Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, Mitra spent more than half a day at the Expo, going to nearly each and every stall to understand the technology displayed. Through a special video message for the exhibitors and delegates, Nitin Gadkari expressed the government’s serious concern over the pollution caused by traffic congestion and said, “There is an urgent need for research in Traffic Engineering. All metro cities are facing traffic jams, particularly cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Kolkata. There is a need for ring roads and bypasses”.
The Minister said, “Another major problem in India is that of road accidents. Every year, we see around five lakh accidents and 1,50,000 deaths. By improving traffic engineering, I am confident we can save the life of people by and large”.
Intelligent technologies from all over the world were the highlight of the Expo. Apart from Intelligent Transport Systems, the show attracted companies that provide solutions in the fields of Safety & Security, Toll Management, Urban Traffic Management, Parking Management, Highway Traffic Management and Mass Transport as exhibitors. The national and international trade visitors including secretaries from central and state ministries, representatives from various government departments including transport departments and municipal corporations, senior officers from law enforcement agencies from all over the country, trade experts, concessionaires and integrators for 120 exhibitors and 400 delegates from over 20 countries is a reflection of the Expo’s success. Many of the countries that included Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Korea, China, Austria, the United States, Dubai (UAE), France, Australia and Hungary apart from India brought new technologies to the country for the first time. This gathering under one roof for three days helped in cutting across barriers and facilitating accessibility of important dignitaries and business stakeholders, a process that otherwise takes much individual time and effort without the guarantee of success.
In his Chief Guest’s address, Sanjay Mitra said, “At the TrafficInfraTech Expo, I saw products on display that can not only help reduce the subjectivity of the enforcement officials to a substantial extent, but also ensure that the traffic offences are adequately investigated, recorded and taken forward to a logical conclusion in the courts of law”. Mitra said the show was an eye opener for him and he was very impressed with it: “It was a wonderful learning experience. The various kinds of technologies that private sector and technology providers have developed is truly remarkable. I feel enriched. I am particularly impressed by the crash-barriers, traffic calming devices and other road equipment. The traffic enforcement measures and the integrated traffic solutions for metropolitan cities were very impressive. This kind of gathering and seminars are very important to facilitate interaction among the stakeholders”.
