London?s traffic congestion charge scheme, the biggest in the world, has completed ten years with a good success record. Traffic jams have been reduced and public transport has speeded up. Congestion has decreased by about 20% while the number of traffic jams has reduced by about 30%. The number of vehicles driven on the city roads has also decreased by about 60,000. The quality of air also has improved, with pollution in central London falling by 150,000 tons of CO2 annually after the implementation of the scheme. The congestion charge system has been implemented by Siemens, and is a part of an integrated transport solution by the company for the city, which also includes traffic information and traffic control systems. A control system supported by satellite optimises passenger information and routes for around 8,000 London buses.
