The session on the topic ‘The need for, challenges in and advantages of achieving Unified ITS Solutions for Highway & Urban Traffic in India’ was moderated by Sanjeev Kumar Lohia, Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Urban Transport Development and Ex-Officio Joint Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India. The panelists were Vivek Phansalkar, Joint Commissioner of Police – Traffic, Mumbai; Dr CSRK Prasad, Professor & Head, Transportation Division, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Warangal; Rish Malhotra, Business Director of International Road Dynamics (South East India); Dr Vishwanath, Former Director, (Engineering Services and Projects), Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai; and Ravi Kumar, Joint Director and Project Leader for the collaborative intelligent transportation system in India, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) Thiruvananthapuram.

Fully commissioned in August 2011, the Mumbai ATC project has transformed the conventional signaling system on the City roads into a real-time computer controlled one. The project won the award for the Best ITS system implemented in 2011 from the Government of India. TrafficInfraTech gives the details.

C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram has deployed Wi-TraC, a wireless traffic signal controller developed by it, at one of the busy junctions in Thiruvanthapuram on a trial basis. If this proves successful, the problems posed by the conventional traffic signal controllers might become a thing of the past.

The implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems on Pune's roads has led to an increase in commuting speed and traffic volume and has reduced the travel time, traffic congestion and fuel consumption. Dubbed 'CGRAPS' and funded by the Pune Municipal Corporation, the project has been developed by CDAC Thiruvananthapuram under the JnNURM scheme.
