India and Bangaladesh will construct a 15km railway line which will connect Agartala in Tripura to Akhaurah in Bangladesh. The track will pass through five km of Indian territory with the remaining part being in Bangladesh. While the rail line will improve accessibility in remote areas of India’s north-eastern states, on the Bangladesh side it will link the capital, Dhaka with Chittagong port and resource-rich Sylhet. The project will be built by the Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON) and is scheduled to be completed by 2014.
