Kiwi drivers ready for dynamic EV charging

A survey of 1150 existing and prospective electric vehicle drivers in New Zealand shows that although people have concerns about the safety and charging cost of dynamic wireless charging, it is viewed positively overall. University of Auckland researchers behind the study say drivers are optimistic about ‘on road’ dynamic wireless charging that allows EV users to charge their batteries while driving, but there are concerns.

While on-road charging systems could revolutionise EV charging, making it more convenient and less time-consuming for users, the study results showed that the most compelling advantage of wireless charging was the ease and convenience it offered to EV users, potentially transforming the current charging experience by complementing stationary charging stations. People who prioritised sustainability were more inclined to support and use dynamic wireless EV charging and urban users were more likely to adopt the technology than their rural counterparts. The concerns included data privacy, electromagnetic radiation and the potential costs associated with the adoption and use of wireless in-road technology.
