Cabinet clears GPS project to track public transport

The Union Cabinet has cleared a `1,400 crore project to track all public transport in 32 cities through a global positioning system (GPS) at the national and state level as part of initiatives under the ?Nirbhaya Fund.? The budget exceeds the `1,000 crore fund created in memory of the victim of the December 16 gang rape, but the project will be rolled out in phases. Resources will be augmented as the programme is implemented. Databases on each bus registered at part of a city?s public transport system will record defaults and offences. The GPS network will specifically track use of emergency buttons and video cameras installed in buses.
